Go Kart Challenge Summer Camp

Early College Opportunities High School
Go Kart Challenge
Summer Camp 2019

                                            two orange racing helmets

During the Early College Opportunities High School (ECO) Go Kart Challenge Summer Camp, teams of middle school and incoming freshmen students applied science through using the engineering process to design, build, and race go karts. Students learned and apply the scientific principles regarding gear ratios, centripetal force, centrifugal force, friction, air fuel mixtures, etc during the process of researching, designing, building, testing, and redesigning their go karts.

The two week-long summer camp culminates with the first ever ECO Go Kart Challenge Time Trials. Students will compete for a number of awards including the fastest kart, the fastest pit crew, the best graphics, and most knowledgeable in the science of racing and the engineering process. At the end of the summer camp, one team was crowned the first ever ECO Go Kart Challenge overall champions! The June 3-15th session accommodated 40 students.

Get your friends together and register as a team, or register as an individual and to be placed on a team with four other students. There is a $20.00 registration fee (financial assistance is available). Students received lunch daily and a t-shirt. There were limited spots available. Registration was on a first-come, first-served basis.

Other summer camp details:

We will have a parent/student orientation prior to the start of camp in order to provide further details and answer any questions. Details of this orientation will be provided to all registrants at a later date.

Camp will start each day at 9:00 AM and end at 3:30 PM.

Parents and the community will be able to view the time trials and pit crew challenge on June 15, 2019. Details will be provided at orientation.

Students will be required to wear helmets and other safety gear while operating the go karts. This will be provided.

Safety is a priority. Go kart speed and performance will be age appropriate, and before any go kart takes the track during testing and the time trials, it will pass an inspection by one or both of the ECO auto tech teachers.

Participants are encouraged to bring a hat and sunscreen each day.

We have a zero tolerance regarding inappropriate behavior. Participants must sign the ECO Go Kart Challenge Code of Conduct.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact Jeff Gephart, assistant superintendent of Santa Fe Public Schools at 505-470-6197 or jgephart@sfps.k12.nm.us or Chris Coriz, auto tech and collision teacher at the Early College Opportunities School at 505-231-7561 or ccoriz@sfps.k12.nm.us.
